Circular economy without chemicals controls? Evidence of recirculated toxic plasticizers in flexible PVC products

The global push towards a circular economy (CE) has led to increasing efforts improve resource utilization efficiency, including plastics recycling. However, the presence of additives, especially those that are toxic, complicates recycling in several ways. Without sufficient controls, spread hazardous additives via activities represents significant public health challenge, particularly among developing nations. This study demonstrates evidence such uncontrolled recycling, based on an investigation four household flexible PVC product groups available Thailand. A versatile pyrolysis/thermal desorption gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (Py/TD-GC-MS) method was employed simultaneously screen 18 target plasticizers these products. Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) and diisononyl (DINP) most frequently detected primary plasticizers. DEHP is dominant vinyl boots, flooring sheets, hoses, while DINP cable sheaths, likely due spill-over effect from EU Restriction Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive. Chlorinated paraffins (CPs) secondary also samples, except for boots. other include ortho-phthalates non-phthalates. These results provide insight into combinatory patterns plasticizer ‘cocktails’, comprise restricted, as-yet-unrestricted, non-restricted plasticizers, embedded same individual with maximum seven found single sheath. findings indicate existence potentially risky practices save cost, without consideration their inherent toxicity. Proper interventions necessary ensure CE chemical safety can be synergized.
